If you have installed Windows Vista as an upgrade, it can be uninstalled, but Microsoft doesn't make it easy. Two articles on Microsoft's Knowledge Base (
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925809
and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933170
) say to basically do a backup and then reinstall Windows XP afresh.
However, this is not the only way to do it IF you have a Windows.old folder on your computer. See this article:
http://www.maximumpcguides.com/uninstall-windows-vista/
for complete instructions.
Hope it helps,
David
